Amazing Grace
Tramaine Hawkins
I was the phone-answering guy at Heider Recording in SF, in the late 70s, and the Edwin Hawkins Singers came in to record. Tramaine was a main soloist, and i was astonished and moved by hearing her sing when I took tape into the studio. They let me hang out and listen. Years later, when I was head of A&R at Columbia Records, I worked with Dr. George Butler on a few projects - not in the studio, but consulting with him (when he would ask for my opinion) on mixes and production as albums were being made. And he had signed Tramaine. He played me "Amazing Grace", and everything about it was wonderful. I had comments only on the mix, about getting more vocal support with the very complex but perfect arrangement.
I include here it because I had a small part, and hope that more folks will hear the song.
And in another circle, Abe Laboreal Sr. played bass on the track, and I would later meet his son Abe Jr. and bring him into the Paul McCartney sessions as the drummer. (Abe remains as Paul's drummer and background vocalist to this day).
