INTRO
Open to cold, dark, snow.
A match is lit…
(flute = first light seen on stage)
Then another. And another. And another

Little Match Girl, homeless, walks alone, hoping to sell her matches to the people passing by. (descending music)
People passing in carriages, walking on the street…
She reaches out but is ignored. (fanfare)
She dances frantically to keep warm. (waltz)
Lost in the midst of the crowd and looking for shelter, storm gets worse. (4/4)

1st DREAM
She imagines the match light coming from a stove. (warmth)
The warmth in her dream grows but then fades as the match goes out.
