16. Rape

Quasimodo’s theme starts the excerpt. It turns dark as Claude approaches the sleeping Esmeralda, watches her, and is overcome with lust, and acts on it. Quasimodo can think of no response except to ring the bells. Afterward, Claude leaves, with Esmeralda devastated, and Quasimodo reeling in the horror of it.
