16. Rape

DREAM AND VIGIL (Q. PROTECTING)
Q. finds a hiding place for Esmeralda. She lies down to sleep and Q. sits nearby to guard her. He then lies down and goes to sleep. He has a dream that he is a whole man and goes to Esmeralda in her bed. But the whole man making love to her turns out to be Claude. . .

RAPE
. . . who has come back to the church to find Esmeralda saved. He comes upon her sleeping and attacks her. Quasimodo is jolted from his dream to find a nightmare. He can't tell in the dark that it is Claude on top of his beloved and he attacks like an animal. As he is about to kill the intruder, he (and we) discover Claude. Q. steps back in horror.
Claude crawls away and Q. goes to Esmeralda.
